Design Thinking
It is a mindset.
Design Thinking is the confidence that everyone can be part of creating a more desirable future, and a process to take action when faced with a difficult challenge. That kind of optimism is well needed in education.

The design thinking process is best thought of as a system of overlapping spaces rather than a sequence of orderly steps. There are three spaces to keep in mind: inspiration, ideation, and implementation. Inspiration is the problem or opportunity that motivates the search for solutions. Ideation is the process of generating, developing, and testing ideas. Implementation is the path that leads from the project stage into people’s lives.

Design Thinking can be closely associated with inquiry learning or it can be miles apart. It's about the mindset you approach it with. There are a number of models for design thinking just as there are models for the inquiry process. The importance lies within the depth of the process rather than just working through a sequence of steps. It is about giving students the opportunity to work with authentic problems where they are in control of the learning process and have time to develop prototypes and iterate. It's about students making emotional connections to a problem. It requires time and flexibility and is a very exciting process. You can't help but get hooked as you discover alongside your students.
In saying that there are many models of design thinking, this is one which I particularly like. It is from Nueva School in California, a school based on a hands-on, project-based, design thinking curricula.
